Ari Lohr is a wannabe-astronaut-turned-poet attending university in Boston, MA. He is a Brave New Voices semifinalist, and has performed at various regional slams such as Slamlandia, Portland Poetry Slam, Verselandia, and more. Focusing on the symbiotic relationship between gravity, mental health, queer love, and grief, Ari’s poetry has been published in the Big Windows Review, Kalopsia Lit, and Incandescent Review, and is set to appear in various publications in 2021 including the Interstellar Literary Journal. Evaluated the quality of poems submitted to a small press magazine. Responsible for publication decisions in the magazine’s latest issue. Oversaw the submission and evaluation of over 60 poems in a two-month period.
Note: I began editing for the BFR after I had submitted and been published in the magazine. My editing career and prior submission to the magazine are independent of one another.
Classroom Moderator – Boston University
August 2020 – May 2021
Facilitated the integration of over 10,000 synchronous remote students in hybrid-based education during the COVID-19 pandemic. Led a university-wide effort to protect and test students during the pandemic, a groundbreaking model which ultimately became a national framework for universities to follow.
Speaker – TEDxYouth @ Lincoln Street
Performed a TED Talk about child marriage in the United States, as well as my experience founding the organization Teens Against Child Marriage. Advocated for increased legislation and protection for minors, specifically victims of child marriage in the US.
Advocacy Intern – Unchained at Last
June 2021 – Present
Contacted representatives and senators in Massachusetts to ban child marriage. Convinced over 30 reps and senators to cosponsor H1709 / S937 to ban child marriage, and 100 reps and senators to vote yes on it. Assisted hosting a webinar featuring Chelsea Clinton, Julia Salazar, and Blair Imani.
Editor-in-Chief – Jupiter Review
December 2020 – Present
Ran a small press magazine featuring over 250 submissions per submission window. Oversaw a literary magazine with over 3,000 followers and subscribers across various platforms. Facilitated the release of multiple digital magazines featuring poetry, prose, and art from over 50 artists ranging from the United States to London.
